We will begin a brief lesson on how to write the perfect paragraph. The steps are as follows:
I. The Planning Step: (Always plan your paragraph/paper BEFORE writing it!) 1. We will begin the Planning Step with a paragraph titled: "My Pet" • This will be done using our Inspiration Software 7.5 • Here is the template that we will be using for our planning stage BE SURE TO OPEN WITH INSPIRATION 7.5!
2. The white box in the web indicates a place for your name, the blue box is for the paragraph title, and the yellow boxes are for the topic and concluding ideas. • The three green boxes below that topic sentence signify the place for supporting thoughts and ideas.
3. Please keyboard only single words and short phrases into the web to represent these ideas. • The words and phrases will later be converted into an outline. • The the outline will be used as a guide to creating full sentences during the writing step using the structured writing the organizer template.
4. Next, convert the web into a color-coded outline by selecting the outline option in Inspiration and running spell check to make any initial corrections. • Finally save your file as My Pet Ideas.
5. Finally, print the color-coded outline and give it to me. I will check your content and give you feedback. Once content is appropriate you will be using this outline to continue with the next step of the writing process, the writing style.
II. The Writing Step: In this next step in the process, we will use the color-coded Structured Writing Basic Paragraph Organizer and Microsoft Word to guide and expand your one-word ideas from the outline you just created and had approved into complete sentences.
1. Using the outline as a guide, create complete sentences in the organizer, one at a time. Each sentence will be revised later and edited during the editing step, one sentence at a time.
2. You will expand and elaborate your sentences as you write.
3. Once all the sentences are completed, spell check, proofread and save the Basic Paragraph Organizer in your ELA documents folder as "My Pet".
4. Run a copy of the Organizer IN COLOR for teacher approval.
III. The Editing Step: This part of the writing process requires you to edit your writing. You will receive your paragraph with "dots" in the left margin. This indicates that there is an error in that line. You must correct that line. While doing your editing, be sure thar you have done the following:
Use text-to-speech to read and listen to each sentence, one at a time. Add delete and change any words until the sentences sound right and communicate what you mean.
Check capitalization (the beginning of each sentence and proper nouns) and punctuation, word usage and spelling. Use the spell checker.
Be sure that the three supporting sentences support the topic sentence, then save your paper as "My Pet" in your documents folder and in ELA.
